Farmers Land Trust
The Farmers Dinner and The Farmers Land Trust Partner to Champion Farmland Conservation and Community-Driven Agriculture
About The Farmers Land Trust
The Farmers Land Trust’s Distinct Difference
While most land trust organizations work with people who already own land to utilize conservation easements that only limit land rights and uses and which keep the land in private ownership, available to be bought and sold by whoever has the most money, The Farmers Land Trust is prioritizing the protection of regenerative farms through securing the land in community ownership for farmers with stipulations for land use that promote ecological stewardship and community agrarian economic justice and opportunity.
The Innovative Approach
Through the Farmland Commons model, the land is decommodified in perpetuity and placed in nonprofit ownership of the local communities who are nourished by it. The Farmland Commons is a new take on the status quo of land trust work, pulling ideas and structures from conservation land trusts and community land trusts to evolve the land trust structure to address equity, access, use, and tenure.

The Impact this Work is Creating
The Farmland Commons model that has been created in collaboration with attorneys, farmers, agriculture organizations and others and that is being implemented across the country and being shared around the world places the ownership, power, and control of land and decision-making in local communities, rather than keeping it within a single national organization. This innovative and justice-forward approach ensures a significant increase in the diversity of perspectives and inclusion of a variety of voices who would not have had access to land, capital, and the leadership role of managing that land and capital otherwise.
